I haven't really been exploring the subways and sewers, but the bits I have gone into seem to be pretty plain jane. There are some subway stations, but nothing else I have found. Are there people who offer missions down there, or new and exciting looting opportunities, or places to buy things? Or are they just a quick way to get from A to B without spending SP?

There isn't much down in the subways and sewers; some missions require you to travel to certain subway stations but the NPC is usually at the entrance of the subways such as the Spring Station. The main purpose of the subway and sewers is to provide a safer path for travelling where there is little to no zombies present as compared to travelling overground.

They were designed as fast transit with fewer battles to encounter.

I haven't gone further than just inside the entrances. It's supposedly safer, but above-ground seems safe enough. I don't run into many random encounters. Certainly not enough to spend any sp to go into the sewers or subway

My yesterday experience in the central part of the map 1:

a tight group of 4-5 sewer workers at every 2nd/3rd location all the short way from the middle of the map down to the college. Fortunately for me this time there were no random encounters. So it was easy to pass by.

The first time I went there with a char of about Lvl 10, I was very lucky to get out of there alive.

    But I like wandering there.

The subway's are safer but the twist and turn so often that I end up wasting SP. I have better luck on ground level. It's better to be top side anyway's. That way if/ when you run low on SP you can hide in a building for the night. And latly the scavenging has been really good. I have found grenade's and LOT's of ammo. So the subway is not a very good route.

Nothing in the subways, just a safer travel route.
Which most people have been saying...

subway and sewers are safer to travel in than on the ground and there is a shop at one of the stations and stations give +10XP when found but they is least loot.

i'm not sure about how the sewers are now,
they seem useless but i like how it "feels" down there, so maybe instead of safer travel it could be more of a deathtrap/place-to-kill-a-lot-of-zeds.

There could be a lot of zombies down there since it's easy for a zed to go downstairs or ladders (they would just fall down to the floor) but going upstairs is a problem for them , ladders seems even impossible. Thus eventually you would have a lot of zombies there.

well, its a subway. So zombies in close encounter should be there. I hardly understand the "safer" theme, we already have fast travel for that.

Its dark, its tight, so by all means, they should make it a dangerous melee hunting zone........

Samuel T & SXBB. I like your ideas. They make sense. I zed would fall down a ladder sooner or later and once their there then their stuck there. Subway's would be crawling with zeds. Most would be bums that we're living down there. The sewers would be full of rats and sewer workers. The subway would be more dangerous because of all the possible entry points. The sewer would be safer in the fact that your encounters would be mostly rats.

TBH how safes fast travel. When fast travailing you run the risk of being attacked when you reach your destination. Also fast travailing sucks up a lot of SP. You run the risk of passing out from exhaustion. SO I would say fast travail is convenient not necessarily safe.

For collectors/explorers oriented players, be advised that there are clues to be found in the underground (46 and 130 so far, but I'm not even close to have it all unveiled).

Plus there will certainly be at least one mission-giving location in the underground at 42,24 Raiders Hangout. Been there couple of days ago and it is not active yet though.

And yes, I concur with the feeling that such a tortuous path, with no light and no orientation beacons, hardly any way to retreat, narrow and probably littered with debris, mud and such, and also packed with Zeds would be the last I'd have chosen to stand as "safe and fast travel".

Sewer and subway maps are the quickest to uncover completely. This nets you 3000 XP which is a damn nice boost to new players. Where they are safer and faster travel is when you have little or none of the surface mapps uncovered and fast travel is not an option.

I have said and always will say you should be required to have a light source to navigate these areas. A torch, a lantern, or a flashlight(hand held or gun mounted)

Fast travel takes no more SP then normal travel which to me is wrong. Normal travel has a chance for encounter on every tile, while fast travel has a chance for encounter on 1 tile only, and in my experience its not any higher then a normal chance. Seems to be running your ass off in fast travel should cost you more then calmly walking but I am a hard core server advocate and find the game to easy, but I know I am in a small group of like minded players there.

I do know the Devs once stated there would be more done with them at a later date, but past that I do not know. I still think a few Storage rooms that can be cleared and converted to a safe place to rest or heal need to be implemented.

I wouldn't mind having a SH in the sewer. Nice dark, cool area. No one would know your there. Be a quick escape. Be barely attacked by zeds. Yeah I wouldn't mind.

Not a safehouse, because they will get taken, but a storage room that can be barricaded and slept in for the night so all can use it.

They have one in last stand: Union City. Its pretty interesting to have some place to stay in the dark and dim recluse of the subways/sewers.

    But sewers stink.

in the matter of sewers i was thinking about the use of the gas masks, to travel safely (without the loss of HP) you need to equip a gas mask because of the deadly gases that you normally find in the sewer systems....

    just a thought anyways

That might work, but there's currently nothing compelling us to explore it at the moment. Maybe later, when they've decide what they're gonna do with subways and sewers

    EDIT
GAHHHH.... I wanted to edit the upper post, but I slipped and clicked submit
why don't forums have delete buttons anyways?

Well yet say its be 1 year seen the Pandmic started. The the sewers would be safe cos if they are brick lined sewers like most old sewers they is vents in the tennels and the drains, pipes and gaps in the bricks would vent out the gas too and the sewer are not be used that much nomore so not alot of new gas is going into the sewers.
    They still might smell abit.

If we get to use gas masks in sewers we also need to use a light source of some kind in the sewers and subways.
